Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights leader who fought for equality and justice for all. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929. His father was a minister and his mother was a schoolteacher. King attended Morehouse College and Crozer Theological Seminary. He became a minister in 1954 and led the Montgomery Bus Boycott from 1955 to 1956. This boycott helped to desegregate the buses in Montgomery, Alabama.

In 1957, King helped to found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). The SCLC was a nonviolent organization that worked to achieve civil rights for African Americans. King led the SCLC in many nonviolent protests, including the March on Washington in 1963. This march brought together more than 200,000 people and helped to raise awareness of the civil rights movement.
